Brand by Performance: The QX80 Autograph is overwhelming

by Tony Lesesne

What separates a mere machine from a masterpiece? Is it the raw numbers on a spec sheet, or is it the sheer, undeniable feeling of commanding the road?

Over my career as an automotive journalist and media executive, I have piloted almost every large, dynamic SUV on the market, yet I have always harbored a distinct confession: I have never been a massive fan of driving them, preferring instead the serene indulgence of being driven. But the all-new Infiniti QX80 Autograph challenges that paradigm, fundamentally shifting the narrative of what a luxury flagship can be. It is a vehicle that commands you to take the wheel, demanding to be experienced firsthand. I already know a few close associates who took that leap and bought one—and after a grueling, dynamic week in South Florida, I completely understand why.

The South Florida Affluence cruise: Aventura

From the epicenter of South Florida to the elegant vibes and ride patterns of Aventur, a landscape defined by high fashion, and the nearby roar of the horse track. To command a space like this, you need more than just transportation. You need presence.

During our fun-filled photo shoot, the aesthetic angles are imposin. It demands respect the moment it enters the frame, yet it remains completely inviting. It doesn’t scream for attention; it simply commands it. This is power used correctly. It’s the quiet confidence of knowing you’ve already arrived before you even park.

For me, that’s the secret of the Autograph. The performance isn’t just about the horsepower under the hood; it’s about the absolute serenity inside the cabin. The ride is silky, ironed out, completely unbothered by the pavement beneath. Imagine taking a high-value client out, or sitting back here with a colleague to close a major deal. It is, quite literally, a mobile executive suite.

On BRAND by PERFORMANCE, we look for alignment. True luxury isn't a sales pitch—it’s an experience. It’s the synergy between an affluent lifestyle and engineering that rises to meet it. The Infiniti QX80 Autograph isn't just navigating the culture... it’s setting the pace. But to truly understand this level of execution, we have to look deeper into how this effortless power translates when the road opens up.

The Gauntlet: I-95, South Beach, and Downtown Miami

This is a story of evolution. My week with this modern titan took me through the ultimate gauntlet of Miami topography, from the high-glitz corridors of Aventura, down the relentless, high-speed open pavement of I-95, through the tight, neon-lit arteries of South Beach, and straight into the dense, chaotic heart of downtown Miami. South Florida threw its absolute worst at us: a mercurial mix of blinding, oppressive summer heat, sudden torrential tropical downpours, and bumper-to-bumper gridlock. Through it all, the QX 80 Autograph didn’t just survive; it ruled.

The automotive industry has taken notice of this turnaround. The vehicle has already started collecting notable accolades, including a Newsweek Autos Top Pick award and securing a spot in Popular Science's "Best of What's New" for its forward-thinking interior technology. Furthermore, it achieved a top five-star safety rating as an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, signaling that the engineering overhaul runs deep beneath the skin.Let's see if it gets an AutoFOCUS WORLD nomination from us when the list is released next week.

Mechanical Proficiency & Driving Dynamics

From a purely mechanical perspective, the technical proficiency of this vehicle represents a monumental paradigm shift. Infiniti famously retired its old naturally aspirated V8, replacing it with a masterful 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Do not let the cylinder count fool you—this powerplant is an absolute triumph, churning out a commanding 450 horsepower and a staggering 516 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a seamless 9-speed automatic transmission, the power delivery is instantaneous, wiping away the hesitation typical of a vehicle this massive.

On the open stretches of I-95, when the heavy traffic finally parted and the extreme heat radiated off the asphalt, pressing the throttle unleashed a wave of effortless acceleration. I had to watch it on the smaller streets and leaving the parking lot. Yet, what truly defines the driving dynamics is the Electronic Air Suspension married to Dynamic Digital Suspension technology. This advanced setup continuously reads the road, adjusting the damping on the fly. When hitting the uneven, water-logged streets of downtown Miami during a sudden downpour, the ride remained incomparably smooth, ironed out by predictive technology that neutralizes potholes and body roll. It isolates the cabin so completely that the chaos of the outside world simply ceases to exist.

The Executive Sanctuary

Stepping inside the Autograph trim feels less like entering a vehicle and more like stepping into a private, high-end sanctuary modeled on Omotenashi—the Japanese philosophy of exquisite hospitality. The interior design features are a sensory masterclass, draped in gorgeous, quilted semi-aniline leather across all three rows, accented by open-pore ash wood trim with delicate metal inlays. Space is absolute and uncompromising. The seating configuration provides immense legroom and knee room all the way to the back row, making it a true executive environment. Above, a sprawling panoramic moonroof floods the cabin with natural, warm light, completely elevating the sense of openness.

Look at that back seat, nothing short of amazing. Plush seat, massive center control and storage area. Pure style. The onboard tech is nothing short of breathtaking. The dashboard is dominated by dual 14.3-inch high-definition "Monolith" infotainment screens with Google built-in, creating a seamless, ultra-fast digital landscape. But the true crown jewel of the interior is the segment-first 24-speaker, 1,200-watt Klipsch Reference Premiere Audio System. Featuring individual audio zones and speakers built directly into the front-row headrests, it allows the driver to take a phone call or hear navigation prompts without interrupting the pristine, concert-quality music playing for the rest of the cabin.

Furthermore, during our week of intense Florida heat, the vehicle’s Biometric Cooling technology proved to be a lifesaver. Utilizing an infrared sensor to read the body temperatures of passengers, the Tri-Zone Advanced Climate Control automatically targets and cools anyone who looks overheated, ensuring custom, automated comfort without anyone lifting a finger.

Decoding the Lineup: The Autograph

Distinction & Cost Breakdown

To fully grasp what makes the Autograph tier special, you have to look at how Infiniti structures the QX80 lineup. They haven't just added a badge; they have distinctly segmented the driving and ownership experience across four tiers.

While a mid-tier trim like the LUXE or SENSORY gives you the core performance attributes, the Autograph (starting at $110,595) crosses firmly into six-figure bespoke territory. It justifies its premium over the lower tiers by introducing features you cannot get anywhere else in the lineup. Visually, it sets itself apart with a striking two-tone roof design and distinctive dark chrome exterior accents.

Inside, the luxury is extended to every single passenger: while other trims limit the premium semi-aniline leather and messaging functions to the front row, the Autograph features unique dot-quilted leather across all three rows, alongside second-row executive captain's chairs equipped with their own built-in massage technology and a dedicated rear control panel. Furthermore, it upgrades the driver assistance to ProPILOT Assist 2.1, allowing for advanced semi-autonomous, hands-free highway piloting on mapped routes—a feature that transforms the agonizing drag of heavy I-95 traffic into a genuinely relaxing experience.

The Objective Critique

However, no vehicle is completely flawless, and objectivity requires looking at where the execution stumbles. Despite the brilliant transition from a V8 to a twin-turbo V6, real-world fuel economy remains a tough pill to swallow. While idling through heavy gridlock in downtown Miami and battling the oppressive heat with the A/C at full blast, the fuel gauge dropped significantly faster than expected. The physics of moving a three-ton luxury vault through stop-and-go traffic simply cannot be completely engineered away, meaning buyers must still anticipate frequent stops at the pump.

This is undeniably an executive SUV, meticulously branded and tailored for high-income individuals who possess discerning taste and demand a commanding presence. It targets the buyer who views their vehicle as a direct extension of their professional prestige and personal refinement. Does it succeed? Absolutely. Infiniti has successfully shed its older aesthetic to deliver a vehicle that feels haute-couture, matching the architectural elegance of a luxury estate in Aventura or a penthouse in South Beach. It makes a bold statement without shouting, winning over the elite buyer through pure execution.

The Competitive Landscape

In this hyper-competitive, six-figure luxury segment, the QX80 Autograph faces formidable, well-established immediate rivals:

  • The Cadillac Escalade: The undisputed heavy-hitter of American luxury, known for its massive curbside presence and sprawling curved OLED screens.

  • The Lincoln Navigator: A sanctuary of midwestern luxury that emphasizes smooth, linear travel and opulent, multi-way adjustable seating.

  • The Lexus LX 600: A legendary, ultra-reliable platform rooted in off-road heritage, though it sacrifices a bit of third-row cargo capacity and raw horsepower compared to the Infiniti.

  • The BMW X7: The European dynamic standard, offering sharper handling but noticeably tighter third-row seating space for adults.

What's the botton liner? Ultimately, the decision for any affluent buyer in this segment does not come down to minor feature tallies or cargo dimensions. It comes down to a visceral connection—simply feeling the distinct, refined power and towering elegance of this vehicle. The Infiniti QX80 Autograph has officially arrived at the mountaintop, proving that true luxury isn't just about where you are going, but the absolute state of grace you inhabit while getting there.
